June 14, 2009 BLUE Ocean Award Goes to Volcanoes of the Deep SeaVolcanoes of the Deep Sea was awarded the BLUE Ocean Festival's "Best of Marine and Earth Sciences" award at Savannah, Georgia on June 13, 2009. The award was accepted by Executive Producer and award-winning National Geographic Photographer Emory Kristof on behalf of the production.
About the Film. Volcanoes of the Deep Sea follows the deep sea work of scientists from Rutgers University and the University of Tubingen as they investigate hydrothermal vents located along the Mid-Ocean Ridge. Filmed with an IMAX® camera from the deep sea research submersible Alvin, the film features ground-breaking footage of deep sea hydrothermal vent communities in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Released in 2003, Volcanoes of the Deep Sea has been exhibited to giant screen audiences around the world. The film was recognized with an award for Special Achievement at the Giant Screen Theater Association (2004). The film is also available on DVD and now on Blu-Ray.
About the Festival. BLUE Ocean Film Festival is a global film festival and conservation summit for underwater filmmakers and marine researchers. A simultaneous community festival will share the best of the film competition with the public, and will include presentations from the filmmakers and scientists who created them. Following the festival a selection of winning films will tour the world, providing those who may not otherwise have access to these great films, a chance to learn more about our oceans. The goal of BLUE Ocean Film Festival is to share at all levels, the latest insights on what is happening in our oceans, and to provide tangible ways people can make a difference.
