February 09, 2010 The Ultimate Wave Tahiti Premieres in LAOn Monday, February 8, The Stephen Low Company along with K2 Communications, Quiksilver, Suzuki and Tahiti-Tourisme hosted a capacity crowd at the world premiere of the recently completed production "The Ultimate Wave Tahiti", the first IMAX 3D surf film ever created. The film’s featured personalities, athletes Kelly Slater and Raimana Van Bastolaer, hosted over 500 guests, including surf industry executives, Hollywood film critics, and athletes such as Lisa Anderson, Pete Mel, Mark Healey, Greg Long, Reef MacIntosh and Kassia Meador.
The Ultimate Wave Tahiti plunges audiences into the stunning beauty of an island paradise on a quest to find the perfect wave-riding experience. Filmed in 3D for presentation in IMAX, IMAX 3D and other giant screen theatres, the production features nine-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater and groundbreaking stereo footage of surfing action captured at Tahiti's famed surf site Teahupo'o.
Filmgoers arriving at the premiere were greeted by Tahitian dancers and flower leis in the rotunda, and upon entering the IMAX theatre were able to experience what it would be like to stand in the barrel of a Tahitian wave thanks to “Small Day at Teahupo’o,” an interactive sculptural installation by artist Blakeney Sanford. As guests put on their Quiksilver 3D glasses to watch the film roll out on the massive IMAX 7-story screen, Bob Kresser of K2 Communications thanked director Stephen Low, along with featured personalities Kelly and Raimana, for the two years of dedication that they invested in the physical and mental challenge of creating the world’s first 3D IMAX surf film. Filmmaker, Stephen Low was represented on-screen at the event via pre-recorded video segments--Low is currently filming in Haiti for "Rescue" a film now in production for release to IMAX 3D theatres.
At the Tahitian-themed after-party inside the downtown Annenberg Center, musician Mason Jennings and DJ Chris Holmes entertained the black-tie crowd. And Tahiti-inspired dishes were served, including mahi-mahi and pulled pork appetizers, along with Tahiti’s own Hinano Beer, Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, redleaf water and Mai Tais featuring Sailor Jerry Rum. Also on display at the party were some of Sanford’s other Tahiti-themed pieces of interactive art, as well as film poster art illustrated by renowned movie industry artist and legendary surf artist Phil Roberts, who has captured the vibrant colors of Tahiti and excitement of the wave at Teahupo’o.
The Ultimate Wave Tahiti is produced by The Stephen Low Company and co-distributed with K2 Communications Inc. The film is presented by Suzuki Automotive with supporting sponsorship from Quiksilver and Tahiti Tourisme.
The film officially opens to the public at the California Science Center’s IMAX® Theater on February 12, 2010. The Ultimate Wave Tahiti premieres in Canada at Vancouver's Science World British Columbia in March, 2010.
