Dreamliner Captured in First Flight

Filming out of Seattle, Washington, in a multi-camera shoot on December 15th, 2009, The Stephen Low Company production team captured the first flight of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Filming was for "Legends of Flight", a giant screen 3D production that explores the history of aviation and the evolution of a next generation commercial aircraft.

Shooting involved a crew of 30, a dolly mounted Solido IMAX 3D camera, helicopter shooting with a Spacecam/IMAX camera rig and crane shooting. The First Flight event attracted journalists from around the world; thousands of Boeing company employees were in attendance for the historic event. Chief pilot Mike Carriker and first officer Randy Neville lifted the aircraft off the ground from Paine Field in Everett, Washington at 10:27 a.m. local time, Dec 15th. Followed by chase planes and carefully monitored by engineers via remote telemetry, the pilots took the aircraft through a series of basic manoeuvres over a period of 3 hours aloft. The aircraft touched down in the rain. The event, monitored by international media and broadcast realtime online, was followed by a news conference where the test pilots answered questions about the experience.

Despite the wet weather that greeted the 787's first airborne excursion, the shoot for Legends of Flight was a success, enabling the portrayal of this historic moment for the film. On additional shoot days the crew captured footage of wing fabrication at Boeing's Seattle plant and a scene involving Chief Test Pilot Mike Carriker exploring the prototype fuselages of previous generations of aircraft.

Legends of Flight takes audiences behind the scenes in the design and building of a next-generation aircraft, traces the evolution of a century of aircraft design and takes audiences aloft in a series of magical 3D aerial sequences featuring classic aircraft. The film, produced by The Stephen Low Company and co-distributed with K2 Communications is scheduled for release in June, 2010.
